STONE QUARRY AND RESERVOIR EXTENSION AS <br />THE BEST OPTION FOR AUGMENTING OWASA'S RAW WATER SUPPLY WHET) THE <br />EXISTING CANE CREEK/I]NIyERSITY LAKI;/QUARRY RESERVOIIt SYSTEM NO <br />LONGER MEETS TAE NEEDS OF THE CARRBORO-CHAPEL HII,L CO <br />WHEREAS, ahigh-quality and sufficient water supply is one of the community's most <br />precious resources; anal, <br />WHEREAS, OWASA is committed to providing a supply of high~uali drinkin <br />reliably and economically meet xhe existing and estimated future needs of the community; and,water to <br />' WHEREAS, the OWASA Board of Directors strop 1 desires to m <br />hrghly Protected water resources within Orange County; and, y ~ the available and <br />WHEREAS, OWASA has undertaken a Comprehensive Water and Sewer Master Plan and has <br />completed the technical work regarding water demand projections through 2050 and the various raw <br />water supply options which are available; and, <br />WHEREAS, the OWASA Board of Directors has extensively considered estimated future <br />water demand, the available raw water supply options, and related information including the input by <br />citizens. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE OWASA BOARD OF DIRECTORS <br />THAT: <br />1 • The extended Stone Quarry option is the best approach for reliably and cost~ffectively <br />meeting the Camnnunity's Lang-term water supply needs- <br />2• The extended Stone Quarry option is expected to provide approximately three billion <br />gallons of storage capacity for water from the highly protected Cane Creek Reservoir and University <br />Lake watersheds. <br />3• OWASA is committed to minimizing the potential adverse community impact of the <br />extended Stone Quarry. <br />Adopted this 9~' day of March, 2000. <br />ATTEST: <br />Peter .C.
