The intent of the grant was to fund the Traveling Treasures program and provide
outreach to the children in the Latino community. During February 2000, the Library received notification
from the Orange County Partnership for Young Children that an additional $2,000 was awarded for the
program. The attached Smart Start Grant reflects the receipt of the additional $2,000 for this fiscal year.
(see Smart Start Grant Project Ordinance, page 4)
2) Recently, the Library received a federal reimbursement grant totaling $5,520 from Universal Service Fund,
an agency of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The grant is available to schools and
libraries across the nation. Proceeds from the grant offset costs of telecommunications services, Internet
access, and internal wiring for computers for the Library. This budget amendment provides for the receipt
of these funds. (see column #2, page 3)
3) The Orange County Arts Commission recently awarded a $954 Grass Roots grant to the Library. This
grant will enable the Library to enhance children's programs with guest artists and performers. This
budget amendment provides for the receipt of these funds. (see column #3, page 3)
FINANCIAL IMPACT: Financial impacts are included in the background information above.
RECOMMENDATION (S): The Manager recommends that the Board of County Commissioners approve the
budget ordinance amendments and the grant project ordinance.
