C4112-03/00 <br />RECYCLING SPECIALIST . <br />GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br />Performs intermediate professional administrative work and some field work in <br />organizing and administering a comprehensive recycling and waste reduction program; <br />does related work as required. <br />Work is performed under general supervision. <br />TYPICAL TASKS: <br />Manages the daily operations of the in-town and rural curbside recycling program and <br />coordinates with service contractors on collection problems and troubleshooting; <br />Operates, manages and works in the household hazazdous waste collection program; <br />Manages the daily operations of the multi-family residential recycling program including <br />working with real estate managers to implement and promote the program; <br />Reviews development application for compliance with recycling storage requirements <br />and accessibility to recycling areas; <br />Reviews solid waste management plans with development applications; <br />Attends pre-construction meetings on solid waste management plans; inspects <br />construction site to ensure compliance with approved solid waste management plan; <br />Serves as liaison for school systems about community recycling programs; coordinates <br />school based recycling programs; provides teacher training resources and conducts <br />recycling demonstrations and presentations; <br />Publicizes recycling and waste reduction activities through a variety of community <br />outreach and education programs, including preparing news releases, developing <br />advertising campaigns, community events, writing newspaper columns, designing <br />brochures and flyers, and making public service announcements for radio and TV; <br />Performs related tasks as required. <br />KNOWLEDGES. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br />Thorough knowledge of recycling and solid waste management programs; ability to <br />develop creative and effective programs; general knowledge of personal computer <br />operating systems and applications; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in <br />writing; ability to organize effectively; ability to work effectively with the business <br />community and the general public; ability to resolve problems and complaints; ability to <br />handle a large number of projects. <br />EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br />Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an <br />accredited college or university with major course work in education, public relations, <br />marketing, communication, environmental science or related field and at least two years <br />administrative/management experience in solid waste management, hazazdous waste, <br />recycling or related area. <br />SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: <br />Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Cazolina. <br />
