The project takes place in the spring of each year (April
through June) in order to utilize senior dental students and dental hygiene students just prior to
and after graduation. Last year nearly 1800 children were screened for dental problems. This
memorandum of agreement with the UNC School of Dentistry provides a Project Director for the
grant who arranges for and provides oversight of the dental students that actually provide the
on-site services. This arrangement is unchanged from previous years.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The Health Department pays the UNC School of Dentistry $12,000 for
this service from grant funds. The total amount of the grant is $36,645. Smart Start requires a
10% match from grantees and that portion ($3,664.50) is county funded. The cost per child
screened last year was about $20.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the renewal of the
memorandum of agreement and authorize the Chair to sign.
