s-7 <br />All lumber and timber shall conform to the spaci- <br />fications of the Worth Carolina State Highway and Public <br />Works Commission. Treated timber shall be used for piles, <br />sway bracing and caps. All other timber shall be untreated. <br />Treated timber shall be dense select structural with no <br />heart requirements and shall have at least 308 sapwood. <br />Treateu timber shall be Southern Yellow Pine, and shall be <br />treated to retain 18 lbs of preservative oil per cubic feet <br />of material. untreated timber shall be sound and square <br />e:;ge with 80% heart, and shall be well manufactured from <br />Southern Yellow Pine (excepting Loblolly and Pond), white <br />oak, pest oak, chestnut oak or cypress. <br />PILES: A-1 piles shall have a minimum diameter at the tip . <br />under the bark at the head of 11 inches. Piles shall be <br />driven to a penetration of not less than 10 feet in hard <br />ground--and not less than 1/3 the length of the pile--and <br />fifteen (15) feet in soft ground. <br />GENERAL; All cuts in treated piles and timbers shall be <br />coate with two applications of hot creosote oil and covered <br />with hot roofing pitch. All bolt holes shall be. filled with <br />hot creosote oil before driving bolts. For the untreated <br />timber, all ends, tops and contact surfaces of floor beams <br />and stringers, back faces of bulkheads or abutments, and all <br />tinftr in contact with.earth, metal or other timber shall be <br />treated with two (2) coats of hot creosote oil before <br />assembling. Wood rails and rail posts shall be painted with <br />three (3) coats of white paint prepared from the best <br />quality of lead and linseed oil. <br />11
