Should it appear advisable, in the <br />opinion of the Engineer, however, to deviate from the <br />methods herein prescribed in order to secure an embankment <br />that will fulfill the intent of these specifications, the <br />contractor shall, without additional compensation, make <br />such changes in methods as the Engineer may direct. <br />shallow test holes shall be dug from time to time j <br />-and filled with water to determine the amount of seepage <br />through the embankment. <br />The price named in the proposal per cu. yd. of <br />embankment will be paid for the actual volume of the <br />completed compacted embankment to the lines shown on the <br />drawings or as required by the Engineer, and no allowance <br />will be made for any change in volume. Excavated material <br />from any source that is used in the embankment will not <br />be paid for as excavation. The stripping of borrow pits <br />will be paid for. <br />CONCRETE SPILLWAY: A concrete spillway of the side channel <br />and chute type s all be constructed as shown in the drawings. <br />Excavation for the spillway shall be completed and fine <br />graded to the neat lines shown. Cut-off walls, excavated <br />into the earth or rock, shall be constructed as shown, the <br />concrete being placed against the earth as excavated without <br />forms, so as to provide a watertight condition. <br />Construction--contraction joints shall be placed at <br />50 feet intervals as shown, .with cut-off and expansion <br />joints as indicated in detailed drawings. To prevent uplift <br />from ground water drain pipes shall be placed in the concrete <br />slab of the spillway at intervals shown in the drawings. <br />Drains or weep holes shall also be provided in the downstream <br />cut-off at the end of the concrete spillway. <br />Payment for concrete in the spillway slab and side- <br />walls and for the cut-off walls, including steel reinforce- <br />sent, shall be paid for at the unit price bid in the <br />proposal. <br />GATE SHAFT: The gate shaft, including bridge, shall be <br />constructed as shown in plans, from the depth indicated to <br />the floor shown, at, Elevation 626. The work shall include <br />all wall castings and the 24" sluice gates and the specials <br />for the 48" concrete pressure pipe and the 48" sluice <br />gates and operating stands stems and guides complete, <br />ready for operation. <br />Upon completion of the gate shaft, with the reservoir <br />full and with all sluice gates closed, the structure shall <br />be water tight. <br />The price bid in the proposal shall include the
