3 <br />Orange County <br />Environment & Resource Conservation <br />306-A Revere Road / PO Box 8181 <br />Hillsborough, NC 27278 <br />Phone: (919) 245-2590, Fax: (919) b44-3351 <br />Jha even /I/i[s C..rseh preDervie <br />November 15, 2002 <br />MEMORANDUM <br />TO: Archaeology Consultants <br />FROM: Tina Moon, ERCD Land Use & Preservation Planner <br />SUBJECT: Request for Proposals <br />Cultural and Archaeological Survey <br />Chapel Hill Township Park and Educational Campus (193 acres) <br />Orange County, North Carolina <br />Orange County is seeking a qualified and experienced archaeologist(s) to conduct a <br />survey of cultural and archaeological resources within the proposed Chapel Hill <br />Township Park and Educational Campus. The information will be used for siting future <br />park and school facilities and for identifying areas of historic and cultural interest for <br />interpretation. <br />The property is owned by Orange County, and is located near the intersection of <br />Eubanks Road and Old NC 86, about one mile north of the Calvander crossroads. The <br />best access to the property is via two gravel entranceways along the east side of Old NC <br />86, approximately 1/3 mile south of the intersection with Eubanks Road. <br />The majority of the 193-acre property was owned by the Cate family, who operated a <br />farm dating back to at least the mid-19`h Century. The Cate farmstead includes a 1929 <br />farmhouse and several outbuildings. An unidentified log cabin (ca. 1880s) also,exists on <br />the property.
