Benedict, ext. 2592 <br />TELEPHONE <br />Hillsborough <br />Chapel Hill <br />Durham <br />Mebane <br />NUMBERS: <br />732-8181 <br />968-4501 <br />688-7331 <br />(336)227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: <br />To provide an update to the Board of County Commissioners and the general public on the <br />progress of the Comprehensive Plan Land Use Element. <br />BACKGROUND: <br />The Board of County Commissioners appointed the Comprehensive Plan Land Use Committee <br />(CPLUC) this spring to understand the growth management challenges that lie ahead for Orange <br />County: The Committee was to hear about existing and future conditions and assist the county in <br />gauging the implications of various growth management tools. It is the intent of this part of the <br />process to include as many options as possible for discussion with the most efficient and/or <br />effective tools being narrowed down and recommended after a thorough discussion is completed <br />through the public hearing process. In this manner the combination or synergy of the collection of <br />tools can be considered comprehensively. <br />Following is a rough outline of the activities to date: <br />Analyzed 2000 census data; <br />2. Analyzed historic trends (1980-2000); <br />3. Reported existing conditions and projected future conditions; <br />4. Discussed critical negative development impacts; <br />a. increasing vehicle miles traveled (vmt); <br />b. subdivision dispersion; <br />c. critical water resources and watershed hazards; and <br />d. sprawl byproducts. <br />...\........\..
