Lee. <br /> BACKGROUND: Senator Howard N. Lee grew up in Georgia and attended Fort Valley State <br /> University. After service in the Armed Forces, Senator Lee re-located to Chapel Hill, North <br /> Carolina and earned a Masters of Social Work in 1966. <br /> Senator Lee's distinguished political career began shortly after he came to North Carolina when <br /> he was elected Mayor of Chapel Hill and served from 1969 through 1975. He also later served <br /> in the cabinet of Governor Jim Hunt from 1977 through 1982 as the Secretary of the <br /> Department of Environment and Natural Resources. In 1990, he was appointed to the North <br /> Carolina Senate to represent the sixteenth district and was subsequently elected and re-elected <br /> in 1992, 1996, 1998, and 2000. <br /> Senator Lee is a small business owner in the Research Triangle Park, an adjunct faculty <br /> member at UNC-Chapel Hill, and a member of numerous civic organizations throughout Orange <br /> County. He also lists University of North Carolina athletics as one of his favorite pastimes. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: NONE <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the attached <br /> resolution and authorize the Chair to sign the resolution recognizing and honoring Senator <br /> Howard N. Lee for his many years of public service to Orange County and the State of North <br /> Carolina. <br />
