ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA REM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: October 15,2002 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. S{- e <br /> SUBJECT: Agreement Renewal Between UNG Hospitals and Orange County for the <br /> Senior Wellness Pro gram <br /> DEPARTMENT: Aging PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No <br /> ATTACHMENTS INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Agreement Jerry Passmore, red. 2009 <br /> TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br /> Hillsborough 73241181 <br /> Chapel Hill 9684501 <br /> Durham 088-7331 <br /> Mebane 336227-2031 <br /> PURPOSE: To consider an agreement renewal to receive$50,000 from the University of North <br /> Carolina (UNC) Hospitals for their Co-sponsorship of the Department on Aging's Senior <br /> Wellness Program from July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003, <br /> BACKGROUND: In 1994,the Friends of the Chapel Hill Senior Canter received funding to <br /> implement a Wellness Program at each of the Orange County Senior Centere and rural <br /> community centers. This three-year project, funded by the Kate B. Reynolds Foundation, <br /> ended June 30, 1997, but its success drew the attention of UNC Hospitals. UNC Hospitals <br /> proposed to fund the Wellness Coo linator Position through contractual agreement with Orange <br /> County. This renewal agreement will maintain existing programs and assist implementing new <br /> programs to promote the health and well being of seniors such as community education, fitness, <br /> screenings and flu shots. The Friends of the Chapel Hill Senior Center will continue to provide <br /> operating expense support for this publidprivate partnership. Approximatey 1000 seniors were <br /> served by the Wellness Program last fiscal year <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: 'UNC Hospitals will reimburse Orange County up to$50,000 for the <br /> salary and fringe benefits for the permanent, full-time Senior Public Health Educator who directs <br /> the Wellness Program. (Budgeted costs for salary and fringe benefits equal $47,09D in the <br /> current fiscal year.) Operating expenses (supplies and materials)are provided through Friends <br /> of the Senior Center funds and class fees, budgeted at$7,892 and $24,000 respectively. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends approval and authorization for the Chair <br /> to sign the agreement renewal between UNC Hospitals and Orange County for the continuation <br /> of the Senior Wellness Program. <br />
