Most of southern and western Orange County is in the Cape <br /> Fear basin. <br /> The Cape Fear River Assembly was founded in 1973 and now has over 400 members, with a <br /> 34-member board of directors. The Assembly membership and the board are made up of <br /> representatives from throughout the Cape Fear River Basin and with varying interests <br /> including environmental and conservation organizations, academia, small business and <br /> Industry, government (local, state and federal), and the general public. <br /> The mission of the CFRA is to provide for the highest quality of life possible for the residents <br /> of the Cape Fear River Basin,Orough the proper management of the Cape Fear River, its <br /> tributaries, and adjacent land uses. This mission is ro be accomplished through support of <br /> efforts to investigate, educate and effectuate. Scientific studies coupled with economic <br /> analyses are supported to provide the inform nton needed to make the best possible <br /> decisions regarding this river system and Its uses. Education and policy recommendations <br /> are also part of the group's charge. <br /> Most recently, CFRA has been awarded a grant of$500,000 in environmental enhancement <br /> funds from the Smithfield Farm;settlement agreement. <br />
