APPROVED 9119102
SCHOOL FACILITIES TASK FORCE
MINUTES
May 16, 2002
MEMBERS ATTENDING: Margaret Brown, Keith Cook , Gloria Faley, Alice Gordon, ,
Lisa Stuckey, Dana Thompson
STAFF ATTENDING: Craig Benedict, Ken Chavious, Raymond Cooke, Donna Dean,
John Link, Bill Mullin, Steve Scroggs, Rod Visser
Meeting Chaired by Margaret Brown
Margaret Brown welcomed the group. There was consensus that she and Alice Gordon
would alternate chairing task force meetings.
Margaret suggested that the group determine what they want to try to cover during
today's meeting, as well as a time frame and number of meetings we may need. Gloria
Faley stated her understanding that this should be an organizational meeting, identifying
tasks to be covered. Margaret concurred.
Rod Visser pointed out that the School Facilities Task Force (SFTASK FORCE) report
from April 2001 comprehensively covered topics that task force discussed. Several
were left unresolved deliberately. This group can pick up on those, plus other issues
identified by elected boards during the past year.
Alice noted that some tasks are more urgent than others, such as the Schools Adequate
Public Facilities Ordinance (SAPFO).
Dana Thompson raised concerns that multiple committees not duplicate effort—
perhaps we will need enhanced communication between groups like the High School
Planning Task Force and SFTF.
Alice thinks the objectives cover everything, but some need higher priority, such as
SAPFO. She notes it would be good to have work done on construction standards
before the new middle school and high school are started. Elementary#9 is "already
out of the box".
Gloria inquired whether this task force is going to address 3 separate issues that came
out of the Carrboro Aldermen meeting the other day, although they approved the
SAPFO Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
Alice noted "there are issues and there are issues" - seven were identified in SAPFO
materials as having to be resolved. There are other issues Carrboro raised. Gloria
asked if this group will address those. Margaret suggested that those be written down,
then the task force can discuss whether they should address them.
