Outline of the Reduction Plan <br />• Calls for recyclable materials to be collected <br />commingled (mixed together) from every <br />accessible location in Orange County then sorted <br />at a materials recovery facility. <br />— Currently all recycling is collected source - separated by <br />type of material and shipped directly to intermediate <br />markets to be prepared for final use. <br />— Currently not every address in Orange County receives <br />recycling service. <br />• Collections are conducted by public agencies, <br />private contractors working for both the County <br />and other entities such as UNC. <br />Getting There from Here <br />• Plan scheduled to be phased in over a five year <br />period from FY 2004 -05 to FY 2009 -10. May be <br />delayed. <br />• Projected results bring the County close to the 61% <br />goal without much additional C &D recycling. <br />• Including more C &D recycling may achieve goal. <br />C &D diversion rates now higher than projected. <br />• No financing mechanism yet chosen to implement <br />the plan. County Board has not endorsed schedule <br />or specific plan elements. <br />12 <br />
