Department on Aging staff that re-affirms the campus concept originally supported by resolution
in November1998 (see attachment).
In November 2001, a County bond passed approving $4 million for construction of two new
multipurpose senior centers: a Southern Orange Senior Center to replace the Chapel Hill Senior
Center currently located in leased space on Elliott Road in Chapel Hill, and the Central Orange
Senior Center, also leasing space in Hillsborough. As the Board is aware, the lease of the
Chapel Hill Senior Center is due to expire on June 30, 2006. During May-June, the Orange
County Advisory Board on Aging along with the Friends of the Senior Centers have sponsored
local community input forums on planning for the two new senior centers. All input received will
be shared in a report to the County Commissioners in September in preparation for the formal
senior center planning process.
The Department on Aging and the Advisory Board on Aging are asking that the attached
resolution be adopted by the BOCC as a demonstration of support that can be shared with the
University as it continues its deliberations with the community throughout the summer on
various development options and opportunities for Carolina North. Copies of the resolution will
be forwarded to representatives and officials of the University and UNC Hospital who attended
the April 8, 2003 informational meeting hosted by the County and the Advisory Board on Aging.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The County Manager recommends that the Board of County
Commissioners adopt the resolution that supports a "Senor Wellness Campus" Concept Plan
for the Southern Human Services -Carolina North site.
