A large percentage of this population, without adequate <br />housing supply or support services, are likely to become homeless, <br />Hospitals- According to the US Census, the number of people in <br />nursing homes in Corpus Christi decreased between 1990 and 2000 <br />from 1,856 to 1,702, a drop of 8,3 percent, According to Census, <br />nationally, 46 percent of homeless persons have one or more chronic <br />health problems and 26 percent have at least one acute infectious <br />condition, Homeless persons are likely to have longer length of stay at <br />hospitals and nursing homes and repeated visits to emergency rooms. <br />Mental Health Institutions- Nueces County uses 30 to 31 beds at the <br />San Antonio State Hospital daily. According to 2000 Census, 14,156 or <br />5.6 percent of the population in Corpus Christi were mentally disabled. <br />Of 7,750 mentally disabled persons between the ages 16 to 64, nearly <br />7.5 percent were not employed. According to the statistics provided by <br />the Texas Alliance for Human Needs, Nueces County MHMR's ratio is <br />10 beds/100,000 population, According to the data provided by the <br />Urban Institute, 46 percent reported chronic physical conditions, Among <br />adults using homeless services, 31 percent reported a combination of <br />mental health and substance abuse problems (alcohol and/or drugs) <br />within the past year. Furthermore, 15 percent reported only mental <br />health problems. <br />Foster Care- According to data provided by Family Outreach Corpus <br />Christi (FOCC), there were 4,997 alleged victims of child abuse and <br />neglect and 291 children were removed from their homes in Nueces <br />20 <br />
