reported in the 2000 U.S, Census, was $36,414, In 2000, over 12 <br />percent of the households in Corpus Christi reported an income less <br />than $10,000, nearly 15 percent reported an income from $15,000 to <br />$25,000, and over 13 percent reported an income between $25,000 and <br />$35,000. <br />Just aver 33 percent of African-American households reported an <br />income below $15,000 in 2000, compared to over 13 percent of White <br />households and 24 percent for Hispanic households, Over 31 percent of <br />the total African-American population lived in poverty in 2000, compared <br />to only 8.99 percent of the White population and 22.89 percent of the <br />Hispanic population. Over 40 percent of African-American children <br />below the age of 5 and 30.3 percent of Hispanic children below the age <br />of 5 lived in poverty, compared to 9.1 percent of White children. <br />Nearly 50 percent of the homeless population in the survey reported a <br />need for employment assistance in Corpus Christi. Overall, <br />unemployment in Corpus Christi stood at 7,2 percent in 2000, <br />As Table 2, on the following page, illustrates, the White non-Hispanic <br />unemployment rate was 4.6 percent, while Hispanics reported a nine <br />percent rate and African-Americans a 12,7 percent rate. <br />12 <br />
