^ Twenty-five percent of the homeless population had <br />received psychiatric treatment and 28 percent had <br />received substance abuse treatment, <br />^ Fifteen percent of the homeless population had been in foster <br />care as a child, and <br />^ The cause of homelessness was reported to be unemployment <br />by 19 percent of the homeless, 16 percent cited an inability to <br />pay rent or a mortgage, and 10 percent of the sample cited <br />domestic violence as the reason (88 percent of those were <br />women). <br />Nature of Chronic Homelessness in Corpus Christi- A homeless <br />survey conducted by the Homeless Issues Partnership in 2003 included <br />374 participants, of wham 260 were self-described as homeless. The <br />percentages shown in the results pertain to only the homeless <br />population in the survey. Due to the methodology used to conduct the <br />survey, the results of the survey may not be generalized to the total <br />homeless population of the city. But the figures should certainly give an <br />idea of the nature of homelessness in Corpus Christi. The following are <br />the results of the survey: <br />^ Nearly 39 percent were homeless for more than one year <br />(chronically homeless), <br />^ Over 72 percent of the homeless population were men and 24.56 <br />percent of were women, <br />^ Nearly 67 percent of the homeless were single adults, <br />^ Sixty-eight percent of the homeless were White, nearly 32 <br />percent were Hispanic, and 11.9 percent were African-American, <br />5 <br />
