^ Thirty-eight percent of homeless clients have dropped out of high <br />school, while a high school diploma is the highest level of <br />completed education for 34 percent. <br />Nature of Chronic Homelessness in Texas- According to the results <br />of a survey conducted by the Texas Interagency Council for the <br />Homeless in 1999: <br />^ The number of homeless in Texas was estimated to be about <br />200,000 people, or about one percent of the state's population, <br />^ Forty-eight percent of the sample reported being homeless for six <br />months or less, but 15 percent reported being homeless five <br />years or longer (chronically homeless), <br />^ Men made up 65 percent of the sample. Fifty-nine percent of the <br />sample were single men, 18 percent were single women, and 23 <br />percent were families, <br />^ Whites made up 48 percent, Hispanic 26 percent, African- <br />American 21 percent, American Indian three percent, "other" <br />two percent, and Asian one percent, <br />^ Forty-six percent of the respondents had less than a high school <br />education, <br />^ Forty-one percent of the homeless surveyed reported being <br />employed and, of those unemployed, 44 percent had only been <br />without a job for six months or less, <br />^ Veterans comprised of 24 percent of the homeless <br />population, <br />4 <br />
