Chronically homeless- An average of two episodes, lasting a total of <br />650 days (National l-aw Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2001). <br />Episodically homeless- Four to five episodes of homelessness lasting <br />a total of 265 days. <br />Transitionally homeless- A single episode of homelessness lasting an <br />average of 58 days. <br />1.3. In order to end chronic homelessness, it is necessary to understand the <br />Nature of needs and characteristics of the sub-populations of this large group. The <br />Chronic most significant sub-groups are people who experience chronic <br />Hom®lassnass homelessness as part of a family group and those who are single adults. <br />Nature of Chronic Homelessness in U.S- According to the results of a <br />survey conducted by National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers <br />and Glients (NSHAPG) in 1996; <br />o Sixty-eight percent of the homeless population in IJ.S. were men, <br />o Among the homeless population in families, 84 percent were <br />women, <br />o Homeless clients are roughly equal proportions of non-Hispanic <br />whites and blacks (41 and 40 percent, respectively), with 11 <br />percent Hispanic, eight percent Native Americans, and one <br />percent "other", <br />o Twenty-four percent of the homeless population and 46 percent <br />of the clients in homeless facilities were married or separated. <br />About half of the people who experienced homelessness over the <br />course of a year were single adults, and <br />3 <br />
