The cause of homelessness was reported to be <br />unemployment by 19 percent of the homeless and 16 percent cited <br />an inability to pay rent or a mortgage. <br />Of the 260 homeless participants in a survey conducted by the <br />Homeless issues Partnership of Corpus Christi in 2003, nearly 39 <br />percent were homeless for more than one year (chronically <br />homeless), Nearly 67 percent of the homeless were single adults, 68 <br />percent were White, nearly 32 percent were Hispanic, and about 12 <br />percent were African-American, Almost 80 percent of the homeless <br />were unemployed and almost 67 percent hatl less than a high school <br />education. About 23 percent of the homeless in the survey reported <br />having a physical disability, over 22 percent had a mental disability, <br />nearly 25 percent were alcohol abusers, and over 17 percent were <br />drug abusers.
