ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 17, 2003
Action Agenda
Item No, - -~
SUBJECT: Contract Renewal for Pharmacy Services for Health Department
DEPARTMENT: Health PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
ATTACHMENT(S):
Contract
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Rosemary Summers, ext 2411
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To consider approving the contract renewal for pharmacy services for the health
department.
BACKGROUND: For the past three years, the department has contracted with an individual
pharmacist to provide pharmacy services for the department. This will be the second year of
contracting with the same pharmacist. The contract for FY 2003-2004 includes a 2'/s%
increase over last year and equates to $10,283 per year or approximately $30 per hour for on-
site pharmacy services. Pharmacy services for the health department's clinics is $6,673 or 217
hours. Approximately $3,610 of the total contract is attributable to pharmacy coverage for jail
health services (117 hours of pharmacy service). This amount will be recovered through an
internal charge back with the Sheriff's department. These services assure that the health
department and the jail is in full compliance with state laws governing pharmacy management
and oversight. Approximately 2,500 residents received some type of medication from the health
department in 2002-2003 because a pharmacist enabled the nurse practitioners and other staff
to distribute needed medications. In addition, from 25-35% of the jail inmates require some
type of medication.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The total cost of the contract is $10,283 for the fiscal year for
approximately 334 hours of on-site pharmacy services. The $6,673 has been included in the
FY 2003-2004 recommended health department budget and the remainder will be a charge to
the Sheriffs department and should be included in that departmental budget.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the contract and
authorize the Chair to sign, pending the approval of the 2003-2004 budget and county attorney
review.
