Orange County Roundtable Discussion <br />"Providing Services to the Latino Population" <br />Preliminary Report (June 2003) <br />available to all Orange County residents and for out-of-county persons with <br />emergency situations. The Dental Clinic is affiliated with UNC Dentistry and <br />now has afull-time dentist. The clinic uses a sliding fee scale and accepts <br />Medicaid, dental insurance and Health Choice. <br />)p(. Child Care Services <br />^ The purpose of the agency is to educate and help families find childcare. <br />^ The agency has a position established at EI Centro Latino. <br />^ Funds are received from Smart Start, the Towns, and Orange County <br />^ Qualifications for scholarships (subsidy funding) include having a child or <br />children age 0-12 years; families living in or looking for work in Orange <br />County. <br />^ There is usually a waiting list -however, none at present. <br />^ Approximately 15-20% of clients are Latino. <br />XXI. Orange County Rape Crisis Center <br />^ The agency offers 24-hour service and has volunteers that serve as <br />interpreters and companion volunteers to hospitals, court, etc. <br />^ The agency can provide interpreter support and is seeking additional <br />volunteer opportunities for their interpreters. <br />^ The agency implements a 63-hour training program for its volunteers. <br />^ The agency also provides community education through its public school <br />programs. <br />XXII. Habitat for Humanity <br />^ Funds are provided from foundations, governments, grants and private <br />donations. <br />^ Eight Latino families have been approved. <br />^ Program requirements specify that there is at least one adult family member <br />in the home -preferably one that is working. <br />XXIII. Mental Health Association <br />^ The agency serves children with emotional, physical, or behavioral problems. <br />^ The COMPEER program has been unsuccessful at reaching the Latino <br />population. <br />^ .The agency is trying to recruit more diverse board members and staff. <br />XXIV. Piedmont Health Services <br />^ The agency employs a bi-lingual Children's Services Coordinator. <br />^ Smart Start provides funding for children ages 0-5 years. <br />^ The Carrboro Community Health Center is a primary comprehensive health <br />care center. There are Spanish-speaking staff and the center uses a sliding <br />fee scale. <br />^ There is a Maternity Care Coordinator on-site and WIC services are <br />available. <br />
