Orange County Roundtable Discussion <br />"Providing Services to the Latino Population" <br />Preliminary Report (June 2003) <br />^ Offers afterschool and summer programs for youth <br />^ The department is encouraging Latino soccer groups and others to join <br />leagues. <br />^ Programs are open to everyone; however, primarily serves Northern range <br />County. There are no program restrictions. <br />^ The department needs to advertise better. <br />XIII. ESL Coordinator -Chapel HiIIlCarrboro City Schools <br />^ Services include: <br />- Hot-line /Interpreter services in five languages <br />- Parent Orientation sessions in five languages <br />- Parent Sessions <br />- Open Houses <br />- Spanish classes for administration and staff <br />- ESL tutoring <br />- Summer school <br />- Latino Motivational Summit (encourages students to stay in school) <br />^ Works with the schools, UNC and the community <br />^ Employs three ESL teachers <br />^ Maintains two language programs (Spanish and Chinese) <br />XIV. United Church of Christ <br />^ Serves the Latino community <br />^ Provides services to non-church members as well as church members <br />^ Provides advocacy for families trans ortation, <br />^ Challenge: Getting available services to those in need, e.g. P <br />language barriers, etc. <br />^ Matches volunteer tutors with students <br />^ Stresses relevant programming, i.e. find out what the community is interested <br />in and develop programming based upon those interests. <br />^ Provides transportation via church van <br />^ Addresses social and community service gaps <br />^ Affordable health care is the biggest challenge. <br />^ Suggestion: Orange County should review and perhaps model the "ACCESS" <br />program established in Buncombe County. <br />XV. Planned Parenthood <br />^ Administers "Teen Talk", a peer education/pregnancy prevention program <br />- Involves a 40-hour training component <br />- Utilizes paid volunteers <br />^ The agency provides educational and advocacy services throughout 25 <br />counties in central North Carolina. <br />^ Operates two health centers with: <br />- Bi-lingual staff <br />- Federal, State, and private funding <br />- Latino outreach components <br />- Sliding Fee Scale <br />
