Orange County Roundtable Discussion <br />"Providing Services to the Latino Population" <br />Preliminary Report (June 2003) <br />VI. Chapel Hill Police Department <br />^ Officer John Wagner is new to the department and serves as liaison to the <br />Latino community. <br />VII. Orange County Partnership for Young Children <br />^ Administers Smart Start funds -provides no direct services <br />^ Has funded several Hispanic programs, including EI Centro Latino and Bi- <br />lingual Resource <br />^ Helps to find funding for other agencies and organizations <br />^ Produces a Directory of Services, i.e. "The Parent's Pages" which is available <br />in English and Spanish. <br />^ State funding for Governor Easley's "More-at-Four" Program <br />VIII. Communities in Schools of Orange County <br />^ CIS is a national drop-out prevention program with a local emphasis on <br />middle school programs. <br />^ Administers an after-school program in all middle schools <br />^ Funding is provided from county, state, towns and private sector roximatel <br />^ During current fiscal year, CIS served over 1600 students with app Y <br />200 Latino students. <br />IX. Orange County Department of Social Services <br />^ DSS provides numerous programs for Child Protective Services. <br />^ Programs are available for all ages throughout the county. <br />^ DSS receives federal and state funding. <br />^ The department is recruiting bi-lingual staff and offering immersion classes <br />for employees. <br />X. Orange Enterprises <br />^ Services are provided to adults with employment barriers (most have a <br />disability). <br />^ The purpose of the agency is to provide work skills training to individuals. <br />^ Funding is received from the county, towns and schools. <br />^ Students are placed in jobs prior to going to Orange Enterprises. <br />^ The agency currently serves over 200 people with only 2 Hispanic individuals. <br />^ The agency needs referrals. <br />XI. Headstart Pre-K Program <br />^ Administered by the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City School System <br />^ Provides educational training for parents <br />^ Receives federal and local funding <br />XII. Orange County Recreation and Parks Department <br />^ Offers youth and adult classes <br />
