ATTACHMENT II <br />Orange County Roundtable Discussion <br />"Providing Services to the Latino Population" <br />Preliminary Report (June 2003) <br />Orange County Public Library <br />^ Hillsborough Location <br />- Offers Spanish Story Times on two Saturdays per month for children ages <br />2-5 years from 10:30am toded3b aural Mar~rogram was initially funded by <br />Smart Start and is now fun y <br />- Maintains a children's' section of Spanish materials <br />^ Carrboro Location <br />- Provides "Treasure Boxes" in Spanish <br />II. Orange County Cooperative Extension Services <br />^ Offers an "In-Home Breast-Feeding Program" for new mothers. This free <br />program is available in either the home or hospital and is a part of the <br />Extended Family Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). <br />^ The 4-H Program works with the Orange County Schools Migrant Coordinator <br />for program enrollment. There are also enrichment programs available. <br />III. Orange County Department on Aging <br />^ The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) offers free tax assistance. <br />^ In-home Elder Care Services are also available. <br />^ Public transportation is provided via Orange Public Transportation (OPT) <br />- Bi-lingual staff are employed with OPT and there are plans underway to <br />translate informational materials. <br />- OPT offers public routes between Hillsborough and Chapel Hill, medical <br />routes, and Headstart routes. <br />IV. P'Lante Program - ("Let's Roll) <br />^ This teen program produces a newsletter for children and teens. <br />^ The program is based at EI Centro Latino and has a partnership with Youth <br />Creating Change. <br />^ Program information is translated into English on their website. <br />^ The group is looking for opportunities to work with others. <br />^ There is a need for program funding. <br />V. Inter-Faith Council for Social Service <br />^ Offers numerous crisis programs <br />^ Programs are provided primarily in Chapel Hill and Carrboro -with some in <br />Orange County. <br />^ Various funding sources, including an AmeriCorps volunteer to assist with <br />Latino services. <br />^ Claudia Bingham serves as the Coordinator of the IFC Hispanic Task Force. <br />
