ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 17, 2003
Action Agenda
Item No. ~ b -a _ vat
SUBJECT: Latino Services Roundtable Re ort
DEPARTMENT: County Manager PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No
ATTACHMENT(S):
I. Participant List
II P I'mina Re ort
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Sharron Hinton, ext 2302
re i rY p TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To advise the Board of County Commissioners of information obtained from the
Latino Services Roundtable discussion.
BACKGROUND: During the January 2003 BOCC retreat, the Board expressed an interest in
identifying the local human services available to the county's increasing Latino population.
Commissioner Brown worked with Sharron Hinton to convene representatives from the various
non-profit agencies, schools, county human services departments and members of the IFC
Hispanic Task Force. Almost 50 individuals participated in a roundtable discussion held on
April 23, 2003.
Attached is a preliminary report from that meeting which summarizes the programs and services
offered by each agency/ organization as well as agency contact information. This roundtable
discussion was the County's first step toward promoting a coordinated approach to assuring
that the needs of the Latino residents are addressed. Follow-up steps include: (1) sharing this
preliminary report with the attendees for refinement and additional information; (2) re-convening
the group within the next six months for program updates and further discussion of relevant
issues.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the report as
information.
