CHALLENGE. INSPIRE, <br /> Sheldon Lanier described the district's "Attendance Week" initiative. This year's theme is "Be <br /> Here to Get There." Attendance Week consists of daily videos aimed at educating students and families <br /> on the importance of attendance, the mental health supports available, and the connection between <br /> attendance and "the three E's": enlistment, entrepreneurship, and enrollment. He noted that the <br /> Eastern Regional Outreach Director from CFNC would be featuring one of the district's videos on their <br /> social media as a model for other districts. <br /> Slide#10 <br /> Attendance and Mental Health Research <br /> • Research from the Education Policy Initiative at UNC-Chapel Hill cited student <br /> absenteeism and student mental health and well-being tied as the top issues <br /> facing schools. <br /> o The survey results showed that providing mental health supports for students <br /> will reduce absenteeism rates in schools. <br /> • Research from the Journal of Education for Students Placed at Risk (JESPAR) <br /> published in October of 2024 as well as the National Association of Elementary <br /> School Principals directly ties funding for district efforts around addressing <br /> student mental health needs (curriculum,training, resources)to a reduction in <br /> absenteeism. <br /> o Research also cites student mental health as a root cause of high absenteeism <br /> rates in schools/districts. <br /> • Attendance Works(July 2025) warns of avoiding funding cliffs to ensure adequate <br /> AM resources are available for districts to target root causes of absenteeism and <br /> support students. <br /> s El!f T,f,E. CHALLENGE. INSPIRE. <br /> Sheldon Lanier thanked the commissioners for their funding and support for students and <br /> families. He cited research from the Education Policy Initiative at UNC Chapel Hill, linking mental health <br /> support to a reduction in absenteeism rates, and warned of the risks of avoiding funding cliffs if this <br /> work is to continue. <br />
