The
building was listed in the Register under Criterion A: Education, Ethnic Heritage/Black, and
Criterion C: Architecture for its clean Modernist-influenced lines.

We understand that the proposed installation of rooftop solar panels will introduce a new element
into the school’s design, but find that this undertaking will not adversely affect the listed school
if the following conditions are implemented.

1. The solar panels shall have a total vertical height of just under 12" from the top of the roof
covering and be setback no less than eight (8) feet behind the edges of the roofs of the gym and
cafeteria.
2. The solar panels are considered “reversible” and may be removed at any time without damage to
the roofs or to the school itself.
3. If the plans for the solar panels change, Orange County will contact our office to provide
information about the proposed change and request our review.

These comments are made in accord with G.S. 121-12(a) and Executive Order XVI.
