He noted the staff in DEAPR, the interdepartmental <br /> staff, and the community groups who also assisted in the development of the draft trails plan. He noted <br /> community comments regarding a proposed segment of the Mountains to Sea Trail. He said as the plan <br /> was prepared, they felt it was important to respect the integrity of the planning process. He said while it <br /> may look different going forward,they didn't feel they could take it out of the draft because it is something <br /> the Board adopted in 2018. He said the segment connections to Saxapahaw and Hillsborough, two trail <br /> towns that have invested into being on the Mountains to Sea Trail. He said Alamance County acquired a <br /> large park on the county line near Saxapahaw. He said this segment is the best natural surface trail <br /> corridor you can use to get from Saxapahaw to Hillsborough. He said that this may be reevaluated now <br /> that there is a draft set of priorities. He said the next steps are to get feedback from the Board, as well as <br /> advisory boards. He said the plan would return to the Parks and Recreation Council for formal comment <br /> and consideration. He said the plan would be refined based on feedback from those groups and Board <br /> direction. He said cost is a consideration, but it will be difficult to estimate until they are prioritizing trails <br /> and doing feasibility studies. He said the trails plan relies heavily on working with NCDOT on shared use <br /> paths. He shared that NCDOT issued trail encroachment guidelines in 2024, which is a positive sign for <br /> future cooperation. <br />
