Each year I keep and finish multiple steers
produced on my farm. Additionally, I keep replacement heifers and sell replacement heifers from my cow-
calf program each year. Seven years ago, my sister and I started helping local 4-H and FFA members show
the calves I keep. This program grows each year, and we have supported more than 30 local youth in
showing a calf as their project. This year alone, we are finishing 7 steers for market sale and 14 heifers to be
placed in production. As the program has grown, our goals have evolved each year. I added a 20x40 shed
over my corral to extend the current barn in 2023. This year we are looking to evolve our feeding program
from a feedlot program to a more precise feeding program where each calf eats a ration that is weighed and
mixed specifically for the individual calf's needs. With the number of youth we support, this would require a
number of additional resources, including panels and gates for individual pens, bulk bedding, fans for fly
control and temperature regulation, a livestock scale, and individual feeding supplies. In order to develop
our skill in feed conversion, the kids would do weekly weight check-ins and make feed ration adjustments
under my advisement. This would allow kids participating to develop a deeper understanding of feed
conversion and make decisions that would make their market or breeding animal more competitive, both in
the show ring and in the auction. Providing the opportunity for local youth to exhibit cattle has become a
huge part of our family life, and we have learned so much from participating in shows throughout the state.
Now I want to help our youth put best feeding practices to work in our program.

Docusign Envelope ID: 86DC3D28-E2F5-4F2B-97DD-4629368338EA
