Last
year, I began volunteering with TABLE as time has allowed. I have also been a member
of the Society for Epidemiologic Research and Society for Pediatric and Perinatal
Epidemiologic Research.
Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards:
NA
Boards/Commissions applied for:
Board of Health
Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board
I have a background in communication/mass media studies and recently graduated with a MPH
in maternal and child health and a PhD in epidemiology from UNC. I am currently a postdoctoral
fellow focusing on international nutritional interventions for women of reproductive age. I started
my career as a middle school math teacher and, 5 years later, pivoted to public health research
due to the disparities I observed in the classroom. My community involvement as a teacher
frames the way I assess public health issues. It helps me identify community priorities and
search for solutions that are most practical and helpful to the community. My epidemiological
training allows me to dig deeper into the root causes of community health issues and
strengthens my ability to assess the effectiveness of solutions created to address such issues.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
I have been looking for ways to contribute to my local community and the Orange county board
of health seems like a really neat way to do so. I have attended a couple of meetings this year
and I really appreciate how tangible the boards€TMs desire to address local needs is. Throughout
my time at UNC, I was trained on how to most efficiently identify and address community health
needs. I have gained experience doing this through national and international research
experiences and I would love to have the opportunity to contribute to such efforts at the local
level.
