42
Statewide & Regional Context
As Orange County advances its vision for a connected trail network, it is important to understand these
recommendations within the broader context of the systems that surround and shape it. At the statewide
level, North Carolina's State Trails System (as shown in the map below) links various landscapes through a
network of 14 trails, each of which is composed of multiple segments that are managed by federal, state, or
local government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or private landowners! The Mountains to Sea Trail is part
of this system, spanning west to east across Orange County, making it a critical priority for many community
members and a significant component of the Trails Plan.
At the regional scale, government councils and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) across the
Piedmont region are working with the NC Trails Program to expand greenways and multi-modal corridors
across the county. These statewide and regional efforts provide the momentum and context for the proposed
Orange County Trails Plan, which is designed to respond to local community needs.
OR
'$.y`q °s'' ?"F g C a if YY ,q'tm • " sit -`,a o the h Yr
37 irPiJ ITT :p.r 1 a #1 f ! _ .li0^d
.
ones Elk knob ytoner.—rpilot -..
