20
RELATED STUDY RELEVANT FINDINGS FORTHE TRAILS PLAN
• One of the plan's major recommendations is to build additional
trails and create connections between parks, preserves, and
open spaces including potential links to Duke Forest and
Eno River State Park along with existing municipal greenway
systems, which could be made possible through joint funding
opportunities.
• The plan encourages a detailed master plan for the Mountains to
Sea Trail (MST) to identify a route across the county and ensure
it does not become a gap in the statewide trail system.
• Public input in focus groups encourages opening some future
planned park properties for limited interim use (such as nature
trails with signage) before full park development occurs.
• Trail design guidance emphasizes sustainable construction
practices, clear wayfinding, appropriate trailhead amenities, and
equitable access for all residents.
Orange County • Orange County has an approved, adopted MST route map that
Mountains to Sea Trail the Trails Plan should reflect.
(MST)
Adopted January 2018 • The approved MST route runs southwest to northeast from the
Haw River near Saxaphahaw (Alamance County) to Seven Mile
Creek Nature Area, to Hillsborough Riverwalk, to Eno River State
Park before entering Durham County.
• Completed sections of the MST in Orange County include
3.2 miles on the Hillsborough Riverwalk, 3.9 miles within Eno
River State Park, and a section in the Seven Mile Creek Natural
Area with the Friends of MST providing interim road-route
connections for through-hikers.
• The County maintains an MST hub page with the adopted map
and progress reports to guide alignment and coordination.
Carrboro Connects • The plan commits to equitable multi-modal access, expanding
Comprehensive Plan safe walking, biking, and transit opportunities with priority for
Adopted June2022 BIPOC, lower-income, and differently-a bledresidents.
• A priority corridors map targets near-term improvements like
protected lanes, crossings, and traffic-calming strategies on
several main Carrboro roads including Estes Drive, Hillsborough
Road,Jones Ferry Road, NC-54, N. and S. Greensboro Roads,
among many others.
Draft Orange County Trails Plan 17
