10
STUDY AREA SNAPSHOT
This study focuses on the whole of Orange County, whose land pattern mixes rural farmland, forests, and
the towns of Hillsborough, Carrboro, and Chapel Hill and the City of Mebane. Major travel corridors (e.g.,
1-40, 1-85, US-70, NC-54, NC-86) and extensive waterways (e.g., Eno River, Seven Mile Creek) define both
opportunity and constraint for trail positioning. As part of this effort, existing municipal trail systems in
Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, and Mebane were reviewed; however, the plan is primarily focused on
unincorporated areas and the regional connections that link these town networks together. The distribution
of parks and nature preserves anchors many potential trailheads and connection opportunities both within
the county and beyond to neighboring Durham and Alamance Counties. Additional details about the study
area can be found in Section 02: Existing Conditions.
.0
o,M
ME ANE -. •... • HILL RO
nr
O
0
i
i
--
Base map of Orange County, NC showing major towns/cities and park facilities
Draft Orange County Trails Plan 7
