D37. How will you
measure the success
of that engagement
or educational effort?
(200 word limit)
For our new neighborhoods, we will survey participants before and after
they start composting to assess attitudes and knowledge around
composting. This data will be correlated with participant's previous
experience with composting. For example, we would expect someone who
has never composted to have more misconceptions about composting.
In addition, each neighborhood will receive monthly data from
CompostNow. This provides information on the volume of food waste
collected, its GHG emissions impact, and the amount of contamination
experienced by neighborhood.
This project is really a stepping stone on the way to our ultimate goal,
which is to see food waste collection implemented county-wide. In the
future, as Orange County works to implement food waste collection from all
residents, less education will be required because of these initial
neighborhood efforts.
Orange County is growing rapidly. Carrboro has been named an All
American City. This is the moment to grow existing efforts in a way that
shows Orange County as a place that cares about its residents and the
future. Funding this proposal is voting for a sustainable Orange County, for
thoughtful growth of a community that is vibrant and will only grow more
vibrant as projects like this are funded.
D38. Is there
anything else you
would like to add
about the benefits of
your project, how
much community
engagement and/or
education it will
create, or how long it
will last? (150 word
limit)
The FairOaks project has had a number of unexpected benefits to our
community. Surveys have revealed that participants feel a greater sense of
community as a result of the project, and they report being more physically
active because they're walking their compost to the common area in the
neighborhoods. They also report finding new ways to further reduce their
garbage (buying less plastic, etc.). In addition, there has been more
engagement of the neighborhood on local government issues, and three of
our compost leadership team members have run for seats on our HOA
board. The FairOaks project has created a sense of agency in the
neighborhood that wasn't there before, and is a real benefit to FairOaks,
Carrboro, and Orange County. W e anticipate similar results to spread
across Orange County with the expansion of this project.
Criterion 7 - Time to Complete This criterion has a maximum score of 3
points (out of a total of 26 points).
Docusign Envelope ID: 60C8120B-2E2C-4F19-BFBC-3ADFB6A6F8E1
