D28. Please
describe any prior
challenges you have
encountered in past
grants and how you
have worked through
them. How may this
impact this proposed
project? (150 word
limit)
Initially in all 7 neighborhoods we worked with in Carrboro, many residents
are unsure about what items they can and cannot compost and how they
can create a process to collect and temporarily store food waste in their
kitchen that works for their family. Through our surveys of households
about their questions and concerns, combined with our periodic educational
sessions, we’ve been able to help residents overcome their initial concerns
to become regular composters. For example, in FairOaks, we now have
over half of households regularly composting — and that does not include a
sizable portion of residents who already do backyard composting.
Another challenge we faced was that, originally, Carrboro prioritized new
Green Neighborhood grant applicants over continuation projects. However,
due to our success and the desire for many new neighborhoods to join,
Carrboro changed its selection process to allow us additional years of
spread and sustainability.
D29. Please
describe one to three
key partnerships/
collaborations that
add the most value to
the success of the
proposed project.
(250 word limit)
One key partnership is with CompostNow, a Triangle area B corporation,
whose mission is to rebuild the health of our soil by diverting waste from
landfills and using it to create compost for our communities. The FairOaks
program has a 2 year history of working successfully and collaboratively
with CompostNow to provide composting access for 7 neighborhoods in
Carrboro.
In addition, our initial work has resulted in significant partnerships being
built across Carrboro. In two years we've formed collaborations between
strangers from neighborhoods across town. W e've also strengthened our
collaboration with the Town of Carrboro where neighbors now feel they
have more of a voice and a sense of agency related to the town's Climate
Action Plan. These partnerships make a community stronger and more
resilient, especially in times of crisis. W e hope this can happen across
Orange County as well. W e believe Orange County is a place where
people listen and talk to each other. Based on these recently created and
significant neighborhood partnerships, we believe there exists an
opportunity to strengthen relationships across neighborhoods county wide.
D30. If this project is
not selected for
funding in this round,
what other funding
might be used to
support it within the
next 5 years?
Unknown (please describe)
Please describe
what other funding
might be used to
support it within the
next 5 years. (150
word limit)
W hile we will certainly be looking at other funding opportunities, especially
grants, we aren’t aware of any specific funding opportunities that would
allow us to have neighborhoods in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough participate.
Criterion 5 - Local Economic Development This criterion has a maximum
score of 3 points (out of a total of 26 points).
Docusign Envelope ID: 60C8120B-2E2C-4F19-BFBC-3ADFB6A6F8E1
