C1c. Please
describe your
project’s benefits,
including those that
are quantifiable. (150
word limit)
The project will have the following measurable benefits, projected to be:
A total reach of 2178 — 1461 Orange County residents actively
participating in food waste diversion, and another 717 benefiting from
compost and fresh food donations.
A diversion of 77 tons/year of food waste from the landfill, saving
municipalities $4,620 in tipping fees.
A 202 ton/year reduction in CO2 equivalent GHG emissions, generating
$38,380 savings to society (EPA Social Cost of Carbon, 2023).
Regular FairOaks surveys have confirmed the educational and social value
of the composting program in addition to its obvious environmental
benefits. Based on our surveys, we estimate that:
Half of participants will have greater awareness of climate change factors
and also make changes to their food choices (eg, less beef consumption).
One third will get to know more of their neighbors.
One fourth will increase their physical activity (through walking, biking, etc.
to the bins).
C1d. Please choose
the best description
for the type of
project*:
W aste Reduction/Circular Economy
C1e. W hat is the
main way that this
project helps fight
climate change?
(select one):
W aste Reduction
C1f. Please select
the jurisdiction(s)
where your project is
focused and briefly
state how your
project aligns with
the relevant Climate
Action Plans:
Town of Carrboro/Town of Carrboro Community Climate Action Plan
Town of Chapel Hill/Town of Chapel Hill Climate Action and Response Plan
Town of Hillsborough/Town of Hillsborough Comprehensive Sustainability
Plan
Orange County/Orange County Climate Action Plan
Please name the
action items from the
Carrboro Climate
Action Plan that best
align with your
proposed project.
(200 word limit)
Ecosystem recombination #3: Accelerate/expand organic waste
collection/composting. Our project directly tackles one of the major
challenges listed in Carrboro’s plan — the high cost of an educational
campaign needed to inform residents about what can and cannot be
composted.
Docusign Envelope ID: 60C8120B-2E2C-4F19-BFBC-3ADFB6A6F8E1
