B2h. Number of
Volunteers:
24
Section C. Project Information
C1a. Project Name
(This will be used as
the name of your
submission; please
keep your project
name to less than 5
words. Examples:
Tree Planting, LED
Lights, Rain Garden,
Rooftop Solar)
Carolina Community Compost
C1b. Please
describe the
proposed project.
(300 word limit)
Two years ago, Carrboro’s FairOaks neighborhood received a Carrboro
Green Neighborhood grant to launch a new composting program. The
program uses centralized CompostNow collection bins paired with
neighborhood education and training about composting. The community
engagement, spread, and success of the program was an important
element in Carrboro’s recent designation as an All-American City in 2025.
Since then, the FairOaks Compost Program has recruited 6 additional
neighborhoods in Carrboro to launch similar programs – supporting them
with customized technical assistance and a program toolkit. These new
neighborhoods are greatly expanding the impact of the FairOaks Compost
Program — already tripling the amount of food waste collected and
corresponding reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The FairOaks Compost Program proposes to take its successful model and
expand its impact to 7 new Orange County neighborhoods and one church.
Just as we have done in new Carrboro neighborhoods, we will advise
neighborhood/church leaders who will customize their own programs using
our proven toolkit and technical assistance. The compost produced will be
paid forward to community gardens in low-income neighborhoods, teaching
gardeners the importance of healthy soil and providing healthy produce for
low income families.
After 6 months, we will expand the program further in collaboration with
Orange County and its 3 city jurisdictions through strategic placement of an
additional 24/7 CompostNow bin in a county/city/community organization
property adjacent to a low-income neighborhood. W e will hire a part-time
Compost Ambassador from an adjacent low-income neighborhood to assist
with outreach and education near this new bin.
An Orange County Climate Action Grant for $30,478 is necessary to
spread this remarkably successful program from a few Carrboro
neighborhoods to numerous neighborhoods across Orange County. The
ensuing expansion to more representative neighborhoods will lay a solid
foundation for county-wide composting in the near future.
Docusign Envelope ID: 60C8120B-2E2C-4F19-BFBC-3ADFB6A6F8E1
