D34. Please
describe the target
population to benefit
from the project. (200
word limit)
The St. Joseph’s CME Church Solar Project directly benefits the church’s
congregation and indirectly supports the broader Northside neighborhood.
Church members—primarily non-student Northside residents—are
responsible for covering energy bills, which can reach $400 per month. By
reducing these costs, congregants will no longer need to divert disposable
income to power the church, freeing funds for personal or community use.
If donations remain stable, the Church can reinvest energy savings into
programs that support the Northside community both spiritually and
financially. These include initiatives providing essential goods and
services, like their food ministry and property tax assistance.
This project primarily serves the St. Joseph’s congregation, which reflects
the broader neighborhood demographics: 69% of non-student households
are households of color. The Northside neighborhood is historically Black,
home to families who have lived in Chapel Hill for generations. Though
SolarEquity lacks precise income data due to privacy limitations, the area
contains homes valued below average prices in Chapel Hill and Carrboro,
suggesting that it is an economically marginalized community.
By reducing financial pressure on the church and its members, the project
strengthens both the institution and the community it serves, ensuring that
resources remain within the neighborhood to support long-term resilience
and equity.
D35a. How many
people will benefit
from your project in
one year? (This is
the same number
from row 8 in the
D16 table above)
230
D35b. Please
describe how you
arrived at this
number. (200 word
limit)
230 is the number of members of the St. Joseph's CME Church. W e
received the numbers from the church leadership based on how many
people use the church's services. Additionally, we expect the 1,700 people
who reside in the Northside Neighborhoods to indirectly benefit. The overall
Northside Neighborhood numbers are based on the census data collected
by the Jackson Center.
Docusign Envelope ID: F42389BC-2D83-4E00-BC11-D720BFF48873
