She noted that the county is nowhere near
meeting the affordable housing need in the county when looking at all the studies.
Cy Stober provided a caveat that based on a recent approval by Chapel Hill, 1,100 units
are restricted as affordable.
Commissioner Greene said that Carrboro is currently revising their UDO. She said that a
Carrboro council member said that they are planning to position the town to build more housing
in the next few years.
Vice-Chair Fowler asked if it would be multi-family.
Commissioner Greene said that's yet to be determined.
Chair Hamilton said this is timely information given the retreat planned for March 21 st. She
noted that housing affordability has been an issue in the county since she moved here in 2001.
Commissioner Bedford said she is thinking of going back through the draft land use plan
and reviewing the suggested revisions again. She asked if staff was going to go back through
the plan or if they needed the commissioners to do some homework.
Tom Altieri said they would like to hear from the Board if there is anything in the document
that is off-base and should be removed. He said there may be aspects where the Board isn't
sure, and they'd like more information from the public. He gave an example of rural conservation
neighborhoods where the Board might like more feedback.
Commissioner McKee asked if there is an estimated cost to the county for providing
affordable housing.
Cy Stober said that is difficult to determine due to changing federal funding levels.
Commissioner McKee said that is something the Board will have to reconcile in the future.
