Please
describe the
proposed project.
(300 word limit)
In Carrboro, 17% of homeowners are considered cost burdened and 22%
of renters are paying between 30%-50% of their income on rent and
utilities. Twenty-eight percent of renters are extremely cost burdened,
meaning they are spending more than 50% of their household income on
rent and utilities. In Carrboro, 59% of housing is rental property. As
temperatures rise due to climate change, the cost to heat and cool homes
will also rise. At the same time, Duke Energy customers will be hit with
double-digit rate increases in the next three years. This is a perfect storm
that will most impact those already struggling to make ends meet. This
program aims to educate and train Carrboro homeowners and renters in
easy, low-cost ways to reduce their energy bills, while also providing home
energy audits and energy kits that will identify energy efficient, all-electric
upgrades to further shrink their bills. The program targets low-to-middle-
income homeowners that may need additional assistance to take full
advantage of the Electrify the Triangle, EnergySaverNC, and Duke Energy
rebate programs and renters, who are typically left out of energy efficiency
programs. W ith this grant, we propose to reach these residents with the
highest energy burden by recruiting an innovative cohort of community
leaders, trained and resourced to engage underserved communities. Their
mission is to ensure that these residents know how to read their energy
bills and identify ways to reduce energy use. They will also connect them to
hands-on training in simple energy-saving projects and connect them to
weatherization and utility bill rebate programs and point them towards local
contractors to implement needed upgrades. This grant will ease the energy
burden of over 230 Carrboro residents, while reducing 67.41 tons of
MTCO2e annually.
Docusign Envelope ID: B7F69C66-F314-4506-B393-F26F9CEC96B0
