<br />MEMORANDUM <br />To: John Link, County Manager <br />From: Gayle Wilson, Solid Waste Management Director <br />Subject: Alternative Finance Education Efforts <br />Date: April 15, 2003 <br />The Solid Waste Management staff and SWAB members have undertaken some efforts <br />over the past two months at educating the public and local elected officials about <br />alternative financing in Orange County. <br />Highlights of those efforts to date include: <br />• Presentation to Board of Orange County Commissioners: February 26 (Sassaman and <br />Wilson, Jeff Hughes, power point), <br />• Presentation to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen March 17 (Sassaman and Wilson, <br />power point), <br />• Presentation to the Chapel Hill Town Council March 24 (Sassaman, question and <br />answer, with planned future followup), <br />• Presentation to Hillsborough Board of Aldermen April 14(Sassaman and Wilson) <br />• Newspaper articles in Chapel Hill News March 5, Watching Our Wasteline, <br />reprinted in News of Orange March 19, Editorial Chapel Hill Herald on the <br />necessity of solid waste fees, 2 news articles in Chapel Hill Herald: <br />• March Radio interviews: WCHL 1360AM, Muriel Williman (education and outreach <br />staff), WUNC Gayle Wilson <br />• Web information: The following is now posted on the Orange County Web Site, <br />Under the Solid Waste Department page: "What's New" there is a brief directing the <br />reader to the following items: Report from SWAB to BOCC (February 24, 2003 <br />(revised), Memorandum from SWAB to BOCC on financing March 25, 2003 and <br />Power Point Presentation on Solid Waste financing given to Carrboro Board of <br />Aldermen and Hillsborough Board of Alderman and submitted for presentation to <br />Chapel Hill Town Council, and <br />~ Front Page article in Waste Matters, County-wide newsletter published Apri12003. <br />Upcoming, scheduled further outreach includes the following: <br />• Inclusion of brief in Lake Ellen Homeowners Association Annual newsletter, <br />scheduled for publication in June, 2003, <br />• Submitted for inclusion in 24 Chapel Hill HOA newsletters newsletters, <br />• Article to be included in Chapel Hill Carrboro Chamber of Commerce monthly'niche' <br />publication Business Today that is inserted into Chapel Hill Herald and distributed to <br />Chamber members for May, <br />
