"Official for a Day" Agenda <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 96.8-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of April 20 - 26, 2003 as Orange County Government Week <br />and endorse the "Official for a Day" activities. <br />BACKGROUND: The National Association of Counties and the North Carolina Association of <br />County Commissioners encourage local governments to celebrate County Government Week in <br />an effort to educate citizens about county government. A proclamation to acknowledge the <br />week of April 20-26, 2003 as Orange County Government Week is provided as Attachment I. <br />For the past thirteen years, Orange County has celebrated County Government Week by <br />sponsoring the "Official for a Day" Program. On this day, students from the area high schools <br />are partnered with department heads and management staff during the morning to gain an <br />understanding of county government operations. After the mentoring, a mock board of county <br />commissioners' meeting is held whereupon students address issues often presented to the <br />Board. The "Official for a Day" Program is scheduled for Thursday, April 24th. An agenda for <br />the day is provided as Attachment II. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopts the proclamation <br />and endorses the planned event. <br />
