Montgomery
Tim Hillhouse
Jay Smith
Jorge Gomez
4.3
The Police Headquarters Complex consolidates police functions that were housed
in multiple locations, some of which were leased, at 602 East Main Street. With
lobby/main entry on the first floor, the second floor has the Forensic Services Unit,
Criminal Investigations Division, Special Operations Division, a Crime Analysis Unit,
breakroom and meeting room areas. The Chief’s office is on an upper level floor
as are Professional Services, a training area and a space for “Fiscal, Accreditation,
Planning.” The 911 Emergency Call Center (PSAP - Public Safety Answering Point)
for both the City and the County is a key component of this building. The complex
includes a secure, parking deck which allows for future development to wrap the
structure with retail spaces. Evidence storage is also a component of the facility.
The design responds to the City and community’s desire for a non-monolithic
facility so as not to be perceived as a “fortress” by the community and surrounding
neighborhoods. The east end of the building spine intersects with a three story
atrium and civic plaza at the corner at Main Street and Elizabeth Street overlooking
Downtown. The atrium not only houses the public service functions of the
Department but serves as a community meeting space and gallery for public art
and history.
CITY OF DURHAM
POLICE HEADQUARTERS COMPLEX
+
Docusign Envelope ID: ED9774D9-AC0C-4CB2-997F-EA672B7B6C5D
