1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 27, 2002
Action Agen_d a
Item No. _
SUBJECT: Needs Assessment Advisory Committee for the Durham Technical Community
College Satellite Campus in Orange County _
DEPARTMENT: Purchasing and Central PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No
Services and Durham
Technical Community College
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
John Link (919) 245-2300
Pam Jones (919) 245-2652
Dr. Phail Wynn and Barbara Baker,
Durham Technical Community College
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968.4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To receive information regarding the proposed process for conducting the needs
assessment associated with the satellite campus of Durham Technical Community College
(DTCC) in Orange County; and to consider appointments to the group as requested by DTCC.
BACKGROUND: A second component critical to the development of a DTCC satellite campus
is determining the needs of the community as it respects offerings at the satellite campus. Prior
to April 2003, staff of DTCC and Orange County will be surveying residents to determine the
adult education needs of the County. All elements of the population are to be considered in this
first step toward developing a plan for degree and/or certificate programs, courses and other
adult education services for Orange County's community college campus. Special attention will
be given to the needs of potential students who are unemployed or underemployed residents
and graduating high schools students. Current and future employers will also be involved in the
study to ensure that the workforce is being prepared for jobs available in the County.
DTCC envisions that the members of the Advisory Committee for Programming Needs
Assessment will be charged to serve as advisors to DTCC and Orange County staff that will be
conducting the needs assessment. Specifically, the responsibilities of this Advisory Committee
will be attendance at monthly meetings during the course of the needs assessment to:
• Advise on the plans for the needs assessment and ensure inclusiveness,
• Suggest appropriate methods and venues for collecting data,
• Advise staff on the preparation of a final report,
• Advise staff on the presentation of the analysis of the data to the DTCC Board of
Trustees and the Orange County Commission, and
