She asked what methods people have for paying taxes. <br /> 17 Valerie Curry said they start with phone calls, emails, field visits, and letters. She said a <br /> 18 wage garnishment is 10% of their gross wage. She said they usually start there if they must do <br /> 19 illegal action. <br /> 20 Commissioner Portie-Ascott asked if there are any noticeable trends. <br /> 21 Valerie Curry said she has not noticed any trends. <br /> 22 Commissioner Carter asked what NC Debt Setoff collections is. <br /> 23 Nancy Freeman said that it is a way to work with the state to receive payment on debts if <br /> 24 the state is holding any money for an individual. <br /> 25 Valerie Curry said that Health and other departments also use this tool. <br /> 26 Chair Bedford asked if we have lower numbers than other counties. <br /> 27 Bernice Gwynn, Deputy Collections Manager, said there are some counties that collect <br /> 28 more than Orange, but the county collects a considerable amount. She said EMS collects a lot <br /> 29 of money through NC Debt setoff. She listed the other departments that use NC Debt Setoff. <br /> 30 <br />
