7
1 Some Orange County SNAP recipients have already experienced a disruption in benefits, and all
2 SNAP recipients will be faced with managing a fifty percent reduction in benefits until the program
3 is fully funded.
4
5 Given these significant challenges, and the ongoing uncertainty about benefit restoration, the
6 County Manager is proposing to issue emergency financial support to Community Food Providers.
7 Under the proposal, the County would provide $15,000 each to Interfaith Council (IFC) in Chapel
8 Hill and Orange Congregations in Mission (OCIM) in Hillsborough to purchase additional food for
9 their pantries, allowing them to serve more residents. IFC may also use some of the funding to
10 support its meal program, but all funding will be used for food resources. In order to eliminate
11 barriers to access, OCIM has agreed to waive its referral requirement for new clients until SNAP
12 benefits are reinstated in full.
13
14 The remaining $24,000 will be divided equally between Porch Chapel Hill and Porch Hillsborough
15 for two special food distributions. Both food distributions will be held on Saturday, November 8th.
16
17 ➢ The distribution in Chapel Hill/Carrboro will be held from noon to 4:00 PM at the McDougle
18 Middle School located at 900 Old Fayetteville Road, Chapel Hill.
19
20 ➢ The distribution in Hillsborough will start at 10:00 AM and continue throughout the day
21 while supplies last. It will be held in the parking lot of the Orange County Social Services
22 building located at 113 Mayo Street, Hillsborough.
23
24 Each distribution will be open to the public and done in partnership with Orange County. Residents
25 will be served on a first-come, first-served, drive-through basis. People who arrive without a
26 vehicle will also be served. The goal of each distribution is to serve 500 families. The County will
27 also help support outreach efforts and is organizing transportation assistance.
28
29 The County will continue to closely monitor the status of federal funding for SNAP and other
30 federally funded programs. County staff will also continue close communication with community
31 providers to continue assessing the need in the community. At this time, no information is
32 available on how long this reduction will persist or how future disruptions may impact residents.
33
34 ➢ Orange County residents can support neighbors by donating to local food pantries,
35 volunteering at community meal programs, and sharing verified updates from County
36 sources. For information about how to support local food pantries, residents can visit
37 https://orange.ces.ncsu.edu/foodsecurity/how-to-host-a-food-drive/.
38
39 ➢ Residents in need of immediate food support can contact Orange County Social Services:
40 (919) 245-2800; or by email at dssinfo _orangecountync.gov.
41
42 A full list of food resources is available at: https://orange.ces.ncsu.edu/foodsecurity/find-food-in-
43 orange-county/.
44
45 Travis Myren, County Manager, made the following presentation:
46
47
