ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: April 1, 2003
Action Agenda
Item No. ~,.
_ SUBJECT: Public Safety Telecommunicators' Week
DEPARTMENT: Orange County Emergency PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
Management Communications
ATTACHMENT(S):
1) Proclamation
2) State Proclamation
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Nick Waters, ext 3030
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of April 13 through 19, 2003, as Public Safety
Telecommunicators' Week in Orange County.
BACKGROUND: Michael F. Easley, Governor of North Carolina, has proclaimed the week of
April 13 through 19, 2003, as Public Safety Telecommunicators' Week in North Carolina, in
recognition of the telecommunicators that work in emergency dispatch centers serving the
citizens of this state. Two national organizations also recognize and proclaim this week on
behalf of telecommunicators nationwide. Those organizations are the Association of Public
Safety Communications Officials and the National Emergency Numbers Association.
Telecommunicators in Orange County are active in both organizations, working toward
enhancing the quality of service that communications centers provide.
Orange County's communications center provides 9-1-1 service to all citizens in the County and
dispatches the appropriate emergency services and law enforcement in time of need.
Orange County's telecommunicators are among the highest trained in the state.
Telecommunicators provide a valuable service to the citizens and make Orange County a safer
place to live.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the
Proclamation and authorize the Chair to sign it.
