In the years since 1988, the numbers have steadily grown as the County placed
more emphasis on year round programming and increased the number of events. In 2002, 172
seniors competed in 18 different events. The season concluded with an awards ceremony and
dinner, attended by athletes, friends and family. The benefits to the participants and to the
volunteers are great. Many seniors get involved for the sheer fun and fellowship that the games
offer. Others use the competitions for motivation for daily training. The games strengthen
confidence as well as muscles. Many qualify to progress to the State Finals and National
Senior Games.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The financial impact is already absorbed by the County budget in the
allocated funds for designated staff of the Department on Aging and Recreation and Parks
Department who work with this program.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board of County
Commissioners proclaim and declare April 7 through May 3, 2003 as Orange County Senior
Games Events Days.
