23
c) Why combine Rural Activity Nodes?
• The preliminary draft Land Use Plan 2050 included a Future Land
Use Map (FLUM) that classified all rural nodes into one type, "Rural
Activity Node", described as follows:
"Rural Activity Nodes are key intersections of larger rural roads and state
highways that can or do already serve the surrounding community with
commercial retail and service uses. Nodes are located at strategic
crossroads to provide daily commercial and service needs within a short
drive of rural neighborhoods and home sites in the county. Existing
development varies greatly by location but generally includes single-family
homes, neighborhood-scale commercial uses such as service stations and
convenience stores, farms, forestry, and undeveloped parcels"
• The concept of combing was introduced because of the similarities of
compatible zoning districts permitted among the RNAN , RCAN , and
RIAN .
• Simplifying the number of land use categories will help create a more
user-friendly plan.
ORANGE COUNTY
NORTH CAROLINA
